Travel Deals to the Hottest Countries of 2017 on Globetrotting Mama

Portugal

Portugal has always been on our list of favourite destinations. One of the most affordable European cities, Portugal has a distinct cuisine and culture that sets it apart from many destinations. It can offer the best of two distinct types of vacations: head to the Algarve and soak up the sun on one of the miles of sandy beaches. Sample the best seafood from the Atlantic and stand at the “edge of the world.” (The site once thought to mark the edge of a flat world). Or head north and enter wine country, visiting historic sites and architecture that detail Portugal’s rich colonial history.

Deal: For a unique travel experience, stay in one of Portugal’s many Pousadas: monument and historic sites converted into hotels. Book in January and enjoy up to 29% off.

Cuba

Americans might fear that relations with Cuba (and open access to the country) might change under the new President, but Cuba has been, and remains, a favourite destination for many Canadians. Hit an all-inclusive resort for a relaxing beach vacation and experience a country evolving as a tourist destination.

Deal: Air Canada vacations is offering a promotion package on a combined trip to Varadero and Havana. What a great way to see more of Cuba.

South Africa

One of the most beautiful countries on the African continent, South Africa is enjoying a moment in the limelight. Cape Town, in particular, has been named by many in the industry as a hot destination for 2017. Start there and then head out to take in the magnificent experience of a wildlife safari, or settle into the culture of this bustling city centre, with rich architecture and plenty of wine and good food.

Deal: Book a tour with a well-known tour operator so you can fit as much in as possible. Intrepid Travel has some listed, with a few deals to be had in January. For more information.

Japan

Many travel insiders are predicting a continued increase of tourists to Japan, and not just to popular Tokyo. Afar and Lonely Planet named Hokkaido as a hot destination. This island is a popular ski destination. If you are looking for alternatives to powder on the North American continent, head over to Japan! Or take a tour of many of Japan’s most popular cities.

Deal: G Adventures has Japan itineraries on sale. For more information

Finland

And speaking of world class skiing (and one of the most laid back ways of life), Finland deserves a spot on your bucket list. This Scandinavian country, known for their salted fish, sauna and skiing is celebrating 100 years of independence from Russia in 2017. Finland doesn’t often get the spotlight it deserves, but Helsinki is a beautiful and bustling city with plenty of museums, and cultural sites to keep you busy.

Deal: We have fallen in love with photos of Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, where you can stay in  glass igloo in Saariselkä Finland. Book for autumn when you can see the Northern Lights.
