In the past three weeks I have been to Stratford, Ontario twice. Each time I ate and each time I kicked myself for not visiting more often. Most people know the town for its Shakespearean festivals (which are incredible) and yes, it is home to Justin Bieber (long live the Bieb!) but with farms dotting the perimeter and chefs who take the time to perfect their crafts (be it chocolate, curry cream sauce or pizza) it’s got the makings of a perfect late summer vacation.
This month they are making it even easier. Savour Stratford is set to run on the weekend of September 25 and 26th with chef tastings, food demos, farmers markets, kids activities and more. And the week prior they’ve joined with the annual Garlic Festival to offer even more culinary information and opportunities.
Lots of the events are free but there are also some that require tickets and sell out quickly so don’t sleep on this opportunity. While you’re there don’t miss two of my favourites:
Chocolate Barr Derek Barr is a master craftsman and has a yang for connecting tastes you hadn’t thought of. Watch for his goat cheese and chocolate pairing at the festival.
Simple Fish and Chips Fish. Chips. Done in a way that is kind to the planet and your stomach with a few twists (tikka masala! Green curry! Jerk!) thrown in for those looking to kick it up a notch.
And if you happen to see me there in September be sure to say “hello!” Even if my mouth is full I’ll still wave back.
Great picture of Antony from Soiled Reputation! (www.soiledreputation.com)
Emily, he is an easy guy to photograph :) So cool that he’s also a fantastic farmer.
